Acupuncture and Cancer Care

Selma has learned evidenced-based acupuncture in cancer care through The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the largest cancer research centers in the United States where she has learned how to treat cancer patients through modern acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine research. We are not curing cancer but we are treating the side effects of cancer treatments.

Our goal is that each person impacted by cancer may enhance their quality of life through the safe and effective delivery of acupuncture. Acupuncture can be successfully and safely integrated with conventional cancer treatments to improve the outcome for cancer patients.

Acupuncture and Autoimmune Disorders

Many patients have found relief from Autoimmune Disorders due to acupuncture being proven an effective relief for the inflammatory disorders. Here at The Emperor’s Medicine, we have developed various personalized therapies for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, that have been very successful in addressing the root cause of the disorder.

  • Lupus This is a systemic disorder that occurs when your immune system attacks your own organs and tissues, including skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, joints, and brain. Lupus has been classified as one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose because it has a tendency to mimic other diseases. One discrete symptom is the “butterfly rash”. This is a facial rash that looks like the unfolding wings of a butterfly. Symptoms of Lupus range from mild to severe and no two patient cases are exactly alike. The most common symptoms are skin lesions, fever, shortness of breath and joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Chinese Medicine offered here at our practice has been proven to provide optimal wellness for patients with Lupus.
  • Celiac Disease Also known as gluten sensitivity, is the immune response to eating gluten. Gluten is found mostly in foods containing barley, rye, and wheat. Symptoms differ in patients and include itchy skin rashes, joint pain, heartburn, headaches, fatigue, acid reflux, and potential nervous system injury. Here at The Emperor’s Medicine, acupuncture has been a valuable treatment for those who suffer from celiac disease.
  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis This is a condition where your immune system attacks your thyroid, often leading to hypothyroidism. It mostly affects middle-aged women but has also been found to occur in men, women, and children of any age. Symptoms may include pale, dry skin, unexplained weight gain, muscle aches and tenderness, tongue enlargement, hair loss, fatigue, constipation, puffy face, and brittle nails. Here at The Emperor’s Medicine, our patients have benefited from our expert knowledge of combining both Chinese Medicine with Functional medicine and acupuncture for the thyroid to relieve autoimmune symptoms.  We address the root cause of Hashimoto’s and come up with a personalized treatment plan to bring the body back into balance.

Acupuncture and Pain

Acupuncture is best known for its ability to successfully treat pain and its causes. In Chinese medicine, we view pain as an obstruction of qi energy and blood in meridian energy paths due to injury, muscular tension, inflammation, sprains, or pathogenic invasions of cold and damp. Acupuncture alleviates pain by raising endorphin levels and diminishing the nervous system’s sympathetic response. Also, acupuncture decreases inflammation and swelling, relaxes muscles to prevent spasms, and increases energy and blood circulation to the local area.

Dry Needling

Selma has advanced certifications in Dry Needling. She has been practicing trigger point therapy for over 20 years, making her an expert in this field. Dry needling is using an acupuncture needle to needle an active trigger point. This is used for muscle pain and movement impairments.

Other Conditions we treat:

  • Chemotherapy/ Radiation side effects
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Stress-related illnesses
  • Pain Relief
  • Respiratory and Immune Support
  • Gastrointestinal Disorders
  • Cardiovascular Disorders
  • Dermatological Disorders
  • Insomnia
  • And more
Studies show that chronic pain stresses the body and its nervous system, consuming energy and compromising the immune system. This condition causes blood pressure to spike which can ultimately lead to heart attack or stroke. The results of acupuncture treatments are extremely relaxing and thus eliminate these negative aspects of pain in a natural way, without the usual side effects of pharmaceuticals.

The number of treatments needed varies based on the specific condition being treated and each person’s individual needs. Generally speaking, acute pain of less than one month’s duration is often resolved in a short series of treatments spaced close together. Chronic pain requires more consistent regular treatments to achieve long-term relief.

Every patient is unique and requires unique treatment. After an Initial Oriental Medical Examination, we can determine what will be the most efficient and most effective treatment.
